What happens in a lesson?
The role of the Alexander teacher is to use both verbal coaching and gentle guidance with her/his hands to help students become aware of any unnecessary or unnatural tensions that they may be holding in their body, posture, breathing, and movement. Through working on a series of simple, everyday activities such as walking, standing, and sitting in a chair, the teacher begins to help students become aware of their own patterns of movement and how they might be getting in their own way. We also work on specialized activities which are chosen by the student. We apply the principles of the technique to activities or skills like singing, acting, playing an instrument, running, yoga, driving in a car, cutting vegetables, and climbing stairs.
How long is a lesson? How many lessons do I need?
Lessons are 50 minutes in length. Weekly lessons are highly recommended for the beginning student. The number of lessons needed vary with each student. I recommend a course of twelve lessons as a good introduction to the technique and to begin applying it in your daily life. However, you are welcome to come for a few lessons and see if the Alexander Technique is right for you. Often times the benefits that the students observe in themselves inspire them to continue their study beyond the initial course of lessons. On average students study with me for six months to a year.
"The technique is not something that can be learned overnight. It has taken many years to develop present habits and it usually takes many experiences of alternatives to conquer them. However, forward movement is the order of the day, and no one is meant or encouraged to become dependent on lessons or to regard them as treatments, sessions, hours, or anything but lessons". -Frank Ottiwell, "A Matter of Choice"
What is the lesson fee?
Individual Lesson = $80 (per 50 minute private lesson)
Semi-Private Lesson with Two People = $110
Group Lesson with Four or more People = $45 per person
Multiple package lessons are available at a discount. Please call to inquire.
I accept cash, check, Visa, Master Card, and American Express (when paying with credit cards, there is an additional card transaction fee of 3.2%). Payment is handled at the end of each lesson unless monthly payments have been arranged.
I have a 12 hour cancellation policy. Giving me 12 hour notice allows me to make productive use of the available time and also gives you priority in rescheduling a different time for your lesson. There will be a $25 cancellation charge if the notice is not met. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
